The Optoelectronics Research Centre is a world leading research centre for silicon photonics and optical fibres, based at one of the founding members of the Russell Group Universities, the University of Southampton has a world renown reputation for education and research. An opportunity has arisen, based mainly within the cleanrooms and optical labs, for an experienced, mechanically biased, technician to join a small technical team.
The role
You will join the ORC as a highly skilled and experienced technician to carry out technical duties within the labs and cleanrooms, based mainly in Mountbatten Building (53) which is a highly serviced, hi-tech and complex building. The main duties will range from installation of specialist gas lines (compression and welded) and water systems (process chilled water), to manufacturing components using a managed workshop, and installing new lab equipment and furniture. You will play a big part in infrastructure projects, sometimes taking the lead, working from a defined list, utilising colleagues as necessary.
About you
You must be an experienced support technician, with a broad range of skills and experience. You will have excellent technical and communication skills, with the ability to manage your own workload. You will be a proactive problem solver with the ability to manage different tasks ensuring that work is delivered on time and to a high standard. You will be a strong team player, but also be able to work independently. It would be advantageous if you have worked in a scientific/lab/workshop environment, or in a cleanroom environment. Experience in gas line fitting, water line fitting (PVC and ABS), mechanical machining and operational health and safety (e.g. IOSH/NEBOSH) would be advantageous. The successful candidate must be computer literate with standard computer packages such as Word and Excel, more specific programs such as Visio/PowerPoint/AutoCAD would be advantageous for you to have experience with. Training will be provided to the right candidate.
