David Diamond, National Apprenticeship Engagement Manager, CSR Scientific Training said:
“We have seen growing interest in the Education Technician apprenticeship from a variety of universities that are committed to developing their technical workforce. The programme offers a structured entry route into specialist technical roles, supporting both new entrants and existing staff to build practical competence, alongside professional behaviours that are essential in Higher Education environments.
The diversity of settings in which apprentices are being trained reflects the flexibility of the standard and its relevance across teaching, research and specialist support functions. By investing in this pathway, universities are not only addressing immediate skills needs but are also building sustainable technical capacity for the future.”
Dr Sara Bacon, Centre Manager, National Technician Development Centre said:
"We are thrilled to see the Education Technician Level 3 apprenticeship making such a tangible impact across the higher education sector. Since its launch in 2021, it has opened doors for aspiring technicians in a remarkable variety of fields - from arts and sciences to healthcare, veterinary science, and aerospace. This standard not only equips new entrants with the essential skills to excel but also strengthens university technical departments by investing in the talent of tomorrow. Seeing over 30 learners already on the programme, with many more set to complete, is a testament to the dedication of our universities and training providers like CSR Scientific Training in shaping the future of technical education."
Apprentice Idman Abdullahi Mohamed, who earned a distinction grade in 2025, has since advanced to a degree apprenticeship, said:
“I've really enjoyed my time on the apprenticeship programme. Having explored different types of education, I found that being an apprentice was the best route for me. It allowed me to gain hands-on experience in the workplace while also learning alongside like-minded peers in my course.
Throughout the programme, I’ve taken on opportunities I never expected, such as giving presentations, participating in outreach, and shadowing different departments at my workplace. It pushed me out of my shell, helping me grow into a much more confident person.
The experience has also helped me discover new passions, such as outreach and working as a technician, a career path I hadn’t considered before. Being on the programme has given me a strong foundation to pursue a career as a technician.”
