International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Women in Science Day has become a very important initiative Internationally. Now more than ever it is so important to share good new stories and practices. Women and girls have a huge impact on science (and all disciplines).

The NTDC have partnered with the IST to celebrate the fantastic women and girls who play such instrumental roles in our technical community.

Women scientists are at the coal face leading ground-breaking research all over the world. Despite these remarkable discoveries, women still only represent a small percentage of researchers, and their work rarely gains the recognition it deserves. As little as 3% of Nobel Prizes for science have ever been awarded to women.

(2) #NorthInnovationWomen 2021

A campaign celebrating innovative women across the North has returned for its fourth year and on International Day of Women and Girls in Science we wanted to promote this fantastic initiative co-launched with our partners at the N8 Research Partnership.

The Northern Health Science Alliance (NHSA) and the N8 Research Partnership have teamed up to launch #NorthInnovationWomen for 2021.

To talk about your #NorthInnovationWomen recommendations, you must follow the below steps on Twitter for your suggestion to be counted:

• Use the hashtag #NorthInnovationWomen.

• Tag/name the person you want to recommend.

• List their name, role and institution (or as much information as you know/can fit into your tweet).

All suggestions must be made by Tuesday 2 March 2021 (n8research.org.uk/north-innovation-women-2021). The full list will be published on the NHSA and N8 Research Partnership’s websites on International Women’s Day, on Monday 8 March.

(3) Nominations open for Papin Prizes

Nominations are now open for the Papin Prizes; recognising the achievements of technical colleagues across UK higher education and research.

Midlands Innovation announced that nominations are now open, which will be awarded at a special ceremony at HETS 2021.

The Papin Prizes recognise the outstanding work that higher education technicians do to ensure that the highest possible quality of teaching and research can be delivered.

We would encourage our fantastic women and girls in science to nominate their colleagues or send in their self-nominations.
