HETT Band 1: Assistant Technician
Planning and Organisation
Works under supervision but supervision is reduced once competent
Problem Solving
Has the ability to solve simple problems reporting non-routine matters to a supervisor/manager
Possesses numeracy skills – eg statistical techniques
Teamwork and Communication
Works to well established simple routines under regular direct supervision, with tasks and work priorities being allocated to role holders by a supervisor/manager or senior colleague
Works effectively with others
Administrative and IT Skills
Computer literate
Carries out routine record keeping filing data inputting, cataloguing, logging and maintenance of simple databases, ensuring accurate records are maintained
Health and Safety
Complies with relevant health and safety procedures affecting self and others
Safe manual handling knowledge
Entry Qualifications/Experience
Expected QCF level 3 or previous relevant work experience
Professional Accreditation
Working towards RSciTech or EngTech (or professional registration to an associated professional body
Willingness to work towards Associate Fellowship of the HEA (if applicable)
CPD
Actively demonstrates a commitment to professional development by continuing to advance knowledge, understanding and competencies

HETT Band 1: Assistant Technician
Equipment
Report faults or damage to equipment and assist with simple maintenance tasks.
Health and Safety
Promote and follow safe working practices.
Understand and follow safety paperwork, with the ability to identify and report hazards.
Conduct routine compliance tasks.
Maintain good housekeeping, assisting with waste disposal procedures and cleaning activities.
Management, Planning and Delivery
Contribute to meetings.
Leadership and strategy.
Make suggestions to improve the service.
Contribute to and support change.
Stock Control and Asset Management
Assist with stock control and stores operations.
Assist with record keeping, inventory and asset management.
Conduct portering duties.
Facility and Service Work
With high accuracy prepare routine reagents and materials adhering to SOPs where necessary.
Operate simple equipment following instruction or SOPs and interpret simple results.
Organise laboratory spaces in preparation of scheduled activities.
Report faults or damage to infrastructure.
Set up and operate equipment following well-established procedures.
Organise and set up teaching and event spaces, eg studios, theatres, performance spaces.
Training
Assist with the induction of new staff.
